Antik is a classic luge brand fresh out of the capital city, Pretoria. We advertised one of these boards on the First Nature Facebook page a few weeks ago for sale as a complete. To answer all your questions about Antik Classic Luges we asked board builder and experienced street and classic luger Andries Haasbroek to give us a short write up about the boards and the name.
The name Antik is derived from the word ‘Antique’ – which reminds of a time when articles were handmade and craftsmen were sought after as artists, perfectly balancing beauty and utility – but at the same time it merges that attitude with the rush of energy and adrenalin which is modern day gravity racing. Antik classic luges are built using high quality timber, designed to be light and agile for serious downhill racing. All the painstaking hours of shaping, sanding, staining, spraying and polishing involved in the manufacture of each deck is done with pride to produce a deck which looks as good as it performs.
Antik classic luges are made from 9 plies of imported Baltic Birch, known for being amongst the strongest and most dimensionally-stable plywood available, laminated and pressed using a vacuum bag to create a 15mm deep concave. The shape of the deck is a variation of the Lott Classic Buttboard design, altering the aesthetic slightly but keeping the geometry ensuring superb handling and performance.
In order to show off the natural satin shimmer in the wood’s texture the decks are stained rather than painted and sealed with 2K clear (used in the automotive industry) which is then polished to give the deck a brilliant glossy finish.
The dimensions of the decks are 1200 x 290 x 12mm
Each deck is made with passion, there is no substitute for quality.
First Nature is selling the decks complete with Sabre Trucks and ABEC 11 Flashbacks for R1500. Here are a few pictures of the boards and the building process:
